That annoying little truth- (one of the 5 reasons why I always look happy).
We’ve all heard it before, that thing about nobody being responsible for your happiness. In the same way nobody is responsible for making you feel bad.
I mean, yes, they said or did something that was hurtful, annoying, insulting or nasty- They are responsible for that, they are responsible for their words, their actions, their idiosyncrasies.. …but I’m pretty sure they are not responsible for your feelings.
Well ……..I’m certain they are not responsible for mine.
It’s so annoying, mainly because we want people to be responsible for how we feel. It’s easier and more convenient. It’s so annoying because we feel people are supposed to make us happy and when they don’t, or can’t or stop doing so then we get frustrated because they are taking this away from us, depriving us or hurting us. It’s so annoying because we are trying to make people happy all the time…Why can’t everyone just be like us?!
But what if they didn’t have anything to take away in the first place? What if your source of true happiness comes from a higher plain, a deeper place, a different terrain? What if the happiness others brought to you becomes an addition, not a base? Don’t get me wrong, certain people have a duty and responsibility towards us but I still maintain they should never be our source.
I mean how do we explain the people that are never happy with the efforts others make to please them or put a smile on their faces? (hmmmm), And how do we explain the person that has very little in the way of anything and yet is full of joy?
Seriously, it goes to show how much it has to do with the state of one’s mind.
You’ve heard it before and I say it again. No one is responsible for how you feel! You choose to feel how you do based on other peoples words and actions and many times due to circumstances. You hand over that ability to affect you to whoever you choose to hand it over to, and you alone can make a choice to hand it back to the right person.
And do not be conformed to this world [any longer with its superficial values and customs], but be transformed and progressively changed [as you mature spiritually] by the renewing of your mind [focusing on godly values and ethical attitudes], so that you may prove [for yourselves] what the will of God is, that which is good and acceptable and perfect [in His plan and purpose for you]. Romans 12 vs 2 (AMP)
I certainly know not everyone may be able to wake up and bask in this new way of thinking overnight, it may not appear to be that simple …… I mean I know how long it has taken for me to completely realise this myself. I know I have times when I slip! But -phew! What a relief when it finally reins in on your feelings.
And do not be worried, for the joy of the LORD is your strength and your stronghold.” Nehemiah 8 vs 10b. (AMP).
Be Happy
